Artist Biography:

"My early years of doing art were self-taught until I studied fine art at the University of Toledo in Ohio and later at the Art Students League in New York. I also participated in art workshops or had private instruction under the tutelage of such accomplished painters as Anita L. West, Bob Rohn, Ben Konis, and Stephen Duren. I have participated in competitions and won awards in San Francisco, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Toledo, Ohio. My work has been shown in galleries and museums in Toledo, Ohio, Ormond Beach, and St. George Island, FL., and has been sold to private collectors and commercial establishments nationally and internationally.  My academic studies include a PH.D. in Humanities from Florida State University, and I taught art history and literature at the University of Toledo for the past twenty-five years.  Since retiring from my associate professor position eight years ago, I have been able to devote my time entirely to my art career."

Artist Statement

Rob Turley began art early in life, as a self-taught artist who later studied at the Art Students League in New York and took university-level art courses during a career of teaching in the humanities at the University of Toledo. His landscape paintings are inspired by time spent in the Appalachian region, Santa Fe, NM, France, Italy, and his current home in Florida. Working in a blended impressionistic-realistic style, he favors pastel, acrylic, and oil mediums. His creative process begins with 'plein air' studies and reference photos, later developed in the studio. Whether drawn from real places and objects or shaped by imagination, his work aims to evoke emotional truth through mood, light, and color, inviting viewers to see beyond the surface of the scene.
