Beginner Oil Pastel Two-Day Workshop with Sylvia Gortz
Discover the vibrant and versatile world of oil pastels in this fun, beginner-friendly two-day workshop. On the first day, students will learn the basics of working with oil pastels while experimenting with blending, layering, light and heavy pressure, scumbling, stippling, sgraffito, value, and color mixing. Through simple hands-on exercises, you’ll become comfortable with the medium while exploring how different marks, colors, and techniques can create texture and depth.
On the second day, you’ll put those new skills into practice by creating a colorful, expressive oil pastel portrait. We’ll work step-by-step from a simple drawing to bold areas of color, layering, blending, texture, and finishing details. You’ll be given a brief intro to drawing a portrait and an optional outline guide of the face. The focus will be on practicing oil pastel techniques. No previous drawing or oil pastel experience is necessary—this class is all about experimenting, learning, and having fun with color.
All supplies are included, and you’ll take home your technique exercises and a finished oil pastel portrait.
