SECRETARY’S REPORT: FEBRUARY 3, 1948

The public response during the first year that the Memorial Gallery has been open is most gratifying and confirms our belief that in promoting this project we were not only erecting a very worth-while War Memorial, but something that would be of lasting worth to the community, the State and the Nation. We have had between five and six thousand visitors to the Galley and many have stated it is the finest War Memorial they have ever seen because of its simplicity and atmosphere of hope and comfort.

Several visitors who have seen the World’s finest galleries and collections have expressed amazement at finding such a series of paintings in a small community like ours and wondered if our local people realized its’ real value.

The Gallery has been open to the public every afternoon except one (the day of the hurricane). It hasn’t always been easy to secure voluntary hosts or hostesses and some of us have had to do double duty, but I think all who have given such service feel it was time well spent. During the summer vacation period several of the high school students helped out in this work.

Some time after the Gallery was opened we placed a small gift box above the registration desk. This box was made and presented to the Gallery by Mr. John Stanton. To date we have had donations and returns from catalogues from this fist box amounting to more than $275.00. Most of this money has gone toward paying for the catalogues. We still own [sic] $25.00 on this printing bill. These catalogues cost us about 8 cents each, we have no difficulty in selling them for $.25. We have several thousand on hand. Several have remarked that our catalogue is as inspiring as the paintings.

When we have finished paying the printing bill we plan to use the contributions from the gift box to make some needed additions to the Gallery building which will be mentioned under the head of new business. Report respectfully submitted, Tom Coyne, Sec.
