January 17, 2008 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Alexis Lenssen Board President Ormond Beach, FL – The Board of Directors of the Ormond Memorial Art Museum & Gardens announced the retirement of Ann Burt, Museum Director of twelve years. She will be replaced by Susan Tucker Richmond, former Regional Director of the American Lung Association. Ann Burt has served as Director since 1996. During her tenure, she increased the Museum’s annual budget five-fold, grew it’s membership eighteen-fold, doubled it’s facilities, and expanded art education programs for children and adults throughout the community. In 1997, Mrs. Burt launched the summer art camp program which now has a waiting list each year. She has cultivated private funding sources to grant scholarships to disadvantaged children so they may participate in this program. Additionally, her vision expanded to art education in local elementary schools and after-school programs. These have proven invaluable in the wake of reduced art education in our public schools. In 1998, Mrs. Burt facilitated the moving of the Emmon’s Cottage, a property of local historic significance which was set to be demolished. With the help of The Garden Club of the Halifax Country, Florida Power & Light, and local artist Sang Roberson, the cottage was moved to a corner of the Museum’s gardens. This fully restored property now hosts art classes, children’s programs, and an artists' co-op gallery. In 2000, Mrs. Burt obtained funding and oversaw the renovation of the Museum’s original four galleries, and the addition of a classroom. As a result of her efforts, she was named Outstanding Museum Professional by the State of Florida. In the last few years of her tenure, Mrs. Burt has served as the head of Art in Public Places for the two new fire station facilities in Ormond Beach; formed a partnership with Cinematique to host an annual Halloween event in the Gardens; obtained funding from Brighthouse Networks for the restoration of Ormond Beach’s Malcolm Fraser collection of paintings; and launched a campaign to expand the Museum’s classroom space. Ann Burt’s service to the Ormond Beach Community will be honored by the Museum staff, board, members and patrons on Friday, February 1, 2008. Though she will no longer serve as its Director, Mrs. Burt has pledged volunteer support to the Museum, and its new director, Susan Tucker Richmond. To make a gift of recognition to Ann Burt, please contact the Museum regarding the Art Education Classroom Fund at 386-676-3347. ###
