Expressive Abandon: Essential Order

January 11, 2008 through February 29, 2008

The eighteen year Ormond Beach tradition, "A Starry, Starry Night" gallery walk along Granada Boulevard continues January 11th, 2008 from 6:00 8:00 p.m. The Ormond Memorial Art Museum & Gardens will again co-host the event with the Casements Cultural Center and the Ormond Beach Historic Trust. Art exhibitions, entertainment and light refreshments will be featured at each location. Granada Boulevard's Metropolitan Gallery also will be exhibiting work. Gallery to gallery walks, popular in this country since the 19th century in museum districts like Boston and Philadelphia, are experiencing a surge in popularity and are now found in cities throughout the state, often on a monthly basis. Nearly two decades ago, Ormond Beach's Starry, Starry Night originators selected the title in homage to Van Gogh's masterpiece of the same name, and chose the January date to take advantage of Ormond's clear, winter nights, ideal for strolling and enjoying the evening stars.

This year's featured exhibition for the event at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum, "Expressive Abandon: Essential Order," will run through February 29, 2008. Presenting are Orlando artist Karen Carasik and Brian Taylor of Rome, Georgia. Carasik, who graduated from Chicago Kent College of Law in 1980, has built a second career in mixed media, painting and drawing. Carasik began her studies at the Art Institute of Chicago, and has served locally as cofounder of COMMA Alternate Art Space in Orlando. A former officer for the Florida Women's Caucus for Art, Carasik is recognized locally for building exhibition opportunities for women and developing artists. Her work's motivation, self described as "Eastern philosophy with Midwestern pragmatism," incorporates pigmented pulp in mixed media, balancing broad, bold strokes and color with the precision of accurately placed detail. Her content-driven abstracts are message-heavy in areas related to the environment, relationships and displacement. They are expressionistic explosions, emblematic of the competition between emotion and analysis. Her work is widely held in corporate, municipal and private collections nationally.

Brian Taylor's acrylics on laminated wood illustrate a different, yet equally satisfying balance, celebrating the organized chaos of the natural world. Taylor received his B.FA. in Studio Art from Memphis State in 1984 and his M.F.A. from the University of Memphis in 1994, and works as an Associate Professor of Art at Shorter College in Rome, Georgia. Taylor's abstracts sing with the perfect measure of crisp and smooth, rhythmic and melodic. His visual choices are second only to his nomen-clature, with names like "Wild Fruit And Wild Flowers...life like a love letter with spelling mistakes," and "River Canyon Rapids...the surrender of forever now to the quick maybe." Giving up nature's realism to Brian Taylor is as pleasurable as it gets.
