Birds With An Attitude

September 15, 2007 through November 4, 2007

The Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens will host an exhibition of "Birds With an Attitude" September 15 through November 4, 2007. Atlanta Artist Rick Raschke, whose work largely drove the exhibition title, will present his modern art collection of drawings, oils and lithographs of these bold and brazen characters. With image names like "Cooquack Control Coots" and "Velvet Breasted Oyster Catcher" you get a feel for Raschke's ability to tip the studied realism of John James Audubon on its ear. He is more fascinated with the individuality and tenacious spirit of his subjects than a recorded accuracy of form. He explodes strong color on the canvas, with a keen eye for feather and face, capturing the birdlike traits of pomp mixed up with a little caustic and rowdy style that these creatures exhibit. Raschke, a Seabreeze High School Graduate, holds a BFA from Florida State and an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Cincinnati.

Birds With An Attitude won't leave the realism lovers cold either, offering the three dimensional sculpture of Scott Hiestand, and David Monaco and the photography of Dr. Harry Moulis. The large scale cedar, walnut and alabaster interpretations of winged creatures will be offered by Ormond Beach resident Bernard Goldstein. Their clean, linear forms are regional favorites.

The featherlike acrylics of Sandra de Nijs, an award winning artist trained at the Academy of Art and Design in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, are contemporary, mixing expressionism with the figurative. Her work has been selected for solo and group exhibition nationally, including the Amsterdam Whitney Gallery in Chelsea, N.Y. and the White Winter Gardens in Indianapolis, IN. Regionally, de Nijs has shown at the Orlando Museum of Art, the Sarasota Art Center and the Art Center in St. Petersburg. Also featured will be Lou Scaturro, whose work aims to capture the freedom, lightness, constant energy and odd angles peculiar to flight.

Birds With an Attitude works to measure the strength and vigorous nature of these dynamic creatures. It seems unlikely that there could be any new interpretations of this familiar subject, but the seven artists of this OMAM show have found a few more worthy vantage points.

Please join us for a private preview reception for Museum member, the artists, and their guests, on Friday, September 14, 2007, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
