Temperature Warp

July 20, 2007 through September 2, 2007

The current exhibition at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens, “Temperature Warp,”  features the photography, painting and sculpture of Beaux Arts of Volusia. The organization’s 50 members possess varying degrees of local and national prominence in abstract and representational fine arts.

“Temperature Warp” will offer visual study of the tangible manifestations of hot and cold and the more subtle observations of human warmth and cool. For realists, the study is somewhat straightforward, although the added nuance of the suggestion of temperature, either situational or behavioral lends itself to evocative images, rooted in message and meaning.

It is a given that the visualizing of temperature will evoke a strong color palette and this show fulfills that expectation boldly. The hot reds and cool blues of New Smyrna Beach artist Gretchen Nass embody both extremes. When Nass strongly arranges these color worlds together the reaction is palpable.

Pat Thompson of Ormond Beach takes us on a dreamy journey with “Her Heart Belongs to Daddy.” The forlorn contemporary maiden and her crimson heart looming overhead like a pop culture pin-up on the wall behind her, leave her a hollow vessel. Despite the interesting, well executed figure, the maiden’s detached red, hot heart remains the most dynamic scene stealing factor in her canvassed world.

Beaux Arts of Volusia publicity chairman Patrick Flannery states:

"This exhibit focuses on the elements of heat and cold - the artists working to give the viewer a strong sense of warmth or coldness from each art work.

The abstract artists of Beaux Arts of Volusia will seek temperature in color, line and mass to give the viewer this experience. The representational artists - who may project the hot/cold environment outright in landscape, still life, and the figure - are given the added possibility of nuance in their works to suggest temperature in the behavior or presentation of the subject."

Frances Massey and Constanz Elder served as Exhibition Chairs.  Jeannie Dowis of New Smyrna Beach served as juror and curator.

BEAUX ARTS OF VOLUSIA, organized 1962 in Daytona Beach, is an invitational, juried group of artists who work in cutting-edge photography, abstract and representational sculpture and painting. While encouraging experimentation, the group also emphasizes the classic fine arts approach: excellence in composition, color, line and quality of execution
