Object LessonsMay 19 through July 2, 2006
The four Vero Beach artists, Ellen E. Fisher, Rene Guerin, Janvier Miller, and Sean Sexton, participating in this exhibit are well known to each other and have shown extensively in both solo and group exhibitions. Although they have been included in some of the same exhibitions, this Boca Raton Museum of Art Traveling show brings the four together in an orchestrated event exploring four complementary interpretations of Still Life. They are not just "More Pretty Pictures;" they are instead appreciations of the familiar and the strange, the perishable and the persistent, the prized and the underappreciated objects which occupy the personal spaces of home, office and studio. With titles like "The Devil and the Virgin" and "War Paint," these images serve as symbols of abundance and conflict, analyzing the physical world for the cultural, aesthetic and emotional meaning of objects. What we collect and consequently, what the artist captures, is significant analysis of what we value and what we are burdened with. Still life in the hands of Fisher, Guerin, Miller and Sexton is more than a statement of ideas based on the humble objects of daily life. It is in most cases, breathtakingly beautiful and accurate in its execution or endearingly charming in it's funky reflection of the ordinary. Object Lessons may sound like a reprimand, but it's no homework assignment. It's an observation that is well worth the trip.
