January 20, 2006 - Starry, Starry Night XVII The seventeenth annual Starry, Starry Night gallery-to-gallery walk in collaboration with the Casements Cultural Center and the Ormond Beach Historical Trust is presented in conjunction with the Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens' opening reception of its first exhibition of 2006: A Shared Legacy: Documentary Photography of the 1930's and Today. The gallery-to-gallery walk is open to the public. A map of the gallery destinations is available here. The traveling exhibition from the Crealdé School of Art, curated by Rick Lang, runs through February 26, 2006. Legacy offers a selection of the finest images from American documentary photographers, many whose careers included early involvement with the Farm Security Administration (FSA.) Created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1935, the FSA's mission was to study the agricultural problems and poverty of rural Americans in the Depression Era 1930's. The project produced 750,000 negatives which are now housed in the Library of Congress1. In developing Legacy, curator Lang assembled a cross section of images specific to Florida, demonstrating that most if not all documentary photographers were influenced by the work of the artists selected for this show. Included are works of Gordon Parks, whose images are recognized from his stellar career as a photojournalist with LIFE magazine, and Arthur Rothstein, photographer and editor for LOOK magazine. The widely recognized work of Dorothea Lange will also be exhibited. Lange's 1936 photograph, commonly known as "Migrant Mother," became an icon of Depression Era photographs and is among the most published photographs in the history of photography. Marion Post Wolcott (see image at top of page) chronicled the life of the affluent of Miami in contrast to the migrant farm workers of Homestead, FL. In addition, FSA photographers John Collier, Jr. and Roy Stryker are presented. Curator Lang has also included contemporary works of Todd Bertolaet, Eric Breitenbach, Gary Monroe, Betty Press, Beth Reynolds, Peter Schreyer, Jay Shoots, Peter Singhofen, Robert L. Stone, Mark Taylor and Warren Thompson. The opening reception will be held on Friday, January 20, 2006, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The Museum staff is happy to accommodate media outlets by arranging artist/curator interviews or photo, film, and video shoot schedules with advance notice.
