HAROLD GARDE, ORIGINATOR: and REACHING CRITICAL MASS June 9, 2003 through July 2, 2003
"Harold Garde, Originator: A Decade of Strappo" will open Monday June 9, 2003. "Reaching Critical Mass", a related group exhibition of strappo works by twenty-six artists who have learned the strappo method and incorporated it into their studio practice, will run concurrently at the Museum. Both exhibitions were organized for the Museum by guest curator, Charon Luebbers. An artist reception for both exhibitions will be held on Friday June 13, 2003, from 6-8pm at the Museum. A gallery talk demonstration with Harold Garde will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2003, at 2pm, again at the Museum. Strappo is an innovative method of dry transfer acrylic monotype developed, named and taught by painter and printmaker, Harold Garde. Garde, who divides his time between Maine and New Smyrna Beach, is the subject of a recently released Maine PBS television production “Harold Garde Maine Master.” "A Decade of Strappo" includes representative strappo works by Harold Garde from each of the ten years following 1993 when he first perfected the strappo printmaking technique. Included in the mini-retrospective are works from Garde’s figure, landscape and kimono series.
The group strappo exhibition, "Reaching Critical Mass", demonstrates a wide range of styles and approaches from pure abstraction/non-objective to still-life and landscape. The exhibition includes strappo works by: Among the many artists selected for the exhibition, two are particularly notable: Elsie Shaw and Trish Thompson, both of whom have made significant contributions to the further dissemination of the strappo method.
