THE SOUL WAS CREATED FOR DARING
HAUGHTY PRIDE AND ITS VICTIM THE GREATEST THING IN THE WORLD
(Office of Motherhood)
The most definite thing in the world is Cosmic Law which has for its foundation, JUSTICE: the absolute balance of all. God is an Entity of free will under law. In all His creation He evidences freedom of His will. This is the element He breathed into man at creation and is man's most valuable asset.
It is this Spirit of God in man that keeps him moving onward and upward toward a fuller cooperation with his Maker. He has fallen on the battlefield, Death pounces upon him, something glides by, Death clutches at that something and finds in his hand only the "golden scarf of reputation," something has escaped the clutches of Death's grasp. It is the Soul or Spirit.
Death can claim out bodies and in time obliterate all memory of our achievements, but cannot claim out Soul.
The Soul or Spirit leaves the physical body which was in temporary abode, and rises to where many hands are stretched out in welcome. When all earthly effort has reached the limit there is a great Cosmic power waiting for out call, a power that has no limit for it is God Himself.
From the hand of ignorance shutting out the light uncoils a grey mist, indefinite and yet constricting as a serpent. It is Fear, Arch Enemy of Life. Fear is a condition foreign to the natural scheme, a malignant growth due to lack of knowledge and doomed to pass away as Man acquires a fuller understanding of Nature and her laws. We cannot see him as many do, a worm with a human head. We see him almost covered and drifted over by the sands of time, the skin dried and shrunken about the bones; around him crumbling and broken is his work; the things he made, his tools, the image of his God; the grey of oblivion drifting, drifting over all that could be claimed by earthly mortality, but from this ruin rises the true man, the Spirit on wings of light to be eternal. It is the promise, rainbow-like above the grave. The Spirit of us cannot die but unites with the myriads of others to form our firmament and become the inspiration for lives yet to come. The Soul was created for daring and only in daring can it keep itself vital. Where would the world be today if it had not been for the great minds of the ages who refused to be bound by precedent or tradition? Through them the unknown has become the known and man's life made richer. We are learning more and more of how wonderful is God and His works. The conflict between might and right; between darkness and light; between ignorance and intelligence, and between good and evil can have but one ultimate outcome. Man, because of his lack of understanding, may delay the coming of the day of victory, but come it will eventually, because it is part of the Cosmic Plan of Creation or Unfoldment. Within us all is placed a power the development of which is vital to the human race. Call it what you wish: Will; Spirit; the God in us - it is that power which keeps us moving forward and upward when circumstances tear at us with phantom hands and the flesh is near exhaustion. It is of vital importance that every child be taught to develop to the fullest extent this Spirit or Will, that is is within, the developer of self-respect which is the Kingdom of Heaven. "Pride goeth before a fall and a haughty spirit before destruction." Words uttered thousands of year ago, but equally applicable to our time. Is not haughty pride the root-evil of today, the desire of man to prove himself greather than those about him so that he may dominate them by the control of all things necessary to their existence? Is not this the canker that has eaten the heart out of other civilizations and if not checked, will it not do the same for us?
There is however a perfect remedy. It was given nearly two thousand years ago by that Great Voice which spoke from the side of a mountain. "The Sermon on the Mount." Of all conditions opposed to the proper production and conserving of human life, none can be less excused than that of war amongst men. The recourse to the warring spirit in man engenders finally a condition of complete debasement and selfishness opposed to the collective life humanity is now being forced into. The grip of war comes heaviest upon woman, wresting from her the privilege of her sex, the bearing and rearing of children, on proper and fitting surroundings for development toward good. Possibly the one great feat of mind that stamps Christ Jesus as the master intellect was the turning of the Gold Rule from "do not do anything to others that you would not have them do to you"; into "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Here is the outlet for the restlessnesss found within us all. It is the true fighting spirit, the effort of evolution toward good and the extermination of selfishness and hate, which can engender only disease and death.
[Abridged version]
The time is coming and coming rapidly when there will be no more war. With the barriers of distance disappearing with the introduction of our modern devices of fast transportation and easy communication must come an era of closer cooperation between men and countries.
What was once labor is becoming an engrossing intellectual procedure calling each day for a better mental and spiritual development, more tender care, more love, an era of building. This is PEACE. We find ourselves to be a composite of two natures very different in the sub-conscious knowledge of their evolution. One seems to have been interested in bringing new life into this world, the other in getting pleasures from the one he already has, and in developing new ways of enhancing that enjoyment even to the extent of visualizing an external existence of his ego. These two natures have been at war within us for many millions of years. However the knowledge of how these two forces can be brought into harmony and make for the building of a better civilization than the world has ever seen, is being brought to us by scientific research. Let us take advantage of this new revelation God is giving us. For generations woman has been swayed and warped by man's desire, at times a chattel, at others an evidence of pecuniary strength and very seldom permitted to enter into a higher plane than these. She is chained to the cross of convention created by man, and what if the chains be of gold, they are chains nevertheless. For ages she hung content or listless in these bonds, but the light of a new understanding is dawning and she has begun the struggle that will leave her free, a co-worker and equal with man in the production of a better condition for the life she has so great a part in bringing into the world. With the rose of pain under her feet and the rainbow of promise overhead, the mother holds the greatest gift of Nature - a new born babe, virgin soil in which any idea will grow.
