ArtReach Summer Camp is fun, dramatic, and educational. These photos are from the final day of the 2004 ArtReach Summer Camp sessions about "The American Indian: Art, Craft, and Performance." Week 1 focused on storytelling, craft and environment. The "American Indian" was introduced through story as the exploration of the the native identity was achieved through arts, crafts, and installation/scene development. Painting, drawing, weaving, assembly, and sculpted works were based on the children's own interpretations of traditional lore. Week 2 was all about process and ritual in art, character development, and performance. Through artistic production, students increased the self-awareness essential for character development. As they became actively engaged in the creation of costumes, props, backdrops, and expressive styles of communication, they began to shape their experience through art and performance. This week emphasized the response to our environments, furthering our exploration of the American Indian. Through painting, drawing and mixed media techniques, students explored process and ritual in art while furthering character development. The final day ended with a performance incorporating skills learned and developed throughout the week. Photos courtesy of ArtReach instructor Regina Stengel The final day's program was presented by Jim Sawgrass, a member of the Florida Muskogee Creek Tribe. He was joined in his presentation by his son, "Wild Cat", also in costume, and instructor Regina Stengel. To see an enlargement, click directly on a photograph.
