Natalia Zarovnaya, a visiting Russian graphic artist, offered a two day lecture and slide series May 25 and 26 to over 35 attendees.   Her discussion, through an interpreter, articulated  the current state of commercial art in the Russian Republic.  Natalia's visit was sponsored by Mr. John King and his wife, Marina Marza, a fellow artist and friend who is currently opening Marina Marza Studio & Gallery at 309 S. Palmetto Avenue in Daytona Beach.

The lectures addressed changes in the Russian art community at the end of the Soviet era and offered insight into Zarovnaya's life's work as a printmaker and painter.  A member of the artist union of Russia, she won the Kaliningrad Biennial Award twice and has works in the collections of the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow and Museum of Modern Art in Bruskie, Brazil, and others.

Photographs from the Harry Messersmith Gallery Talk
September 29, 2002

Harry Messersmith, a sculptor from Deland, Florida, began his recent interactive lecture with examples of the history and evolution of portraiture found in sculpture.

Then he led the group on a tour through the Museum, using pieces from the current exhibition to further demonstrate his point.

Here he is explaining the characteristics of several portraits.

Mr. Messersmith demonstrates the process and ideas of one his own sculptures, "Angel of Thought," which appears just to his right. The sculpture is composed of cast bronze, lead, steel and polymer clay.
